Genesis Open Tournament Structure
Starting in mid-February, the 🙈Genesis Open is one of the most prestigious events on th💙e PGA Tour and concludes the end of the California swing part of the Tour. Usually taking place just after the Super Bowl, the Genesis Open, which is held at the Riviera Golf Course, is a stroke play event, and whoever shoots the lowest score to par will emerge as the winner.
The first few days will be practice rounds before play formally gets underway on Thursday morning. Typically, the Genesis Open will feature an🅰 elite field which f😼avours long hitters, although landing on the fairway can prove to be extremely difficult.
After the second round on Friday, half the field will be sent packing as a cut is introduced, and players that fall below it won’t be around for the weekend’s action. There are plenty of great vantage points scattered around the course, including the 14th hole, which is a par 3. On Sunday after the final round, the winner will be declared. If the tournament can’t be decided after 72 holes, then a playoff will be required to determine the winner.

Popular Genesis Open Betting Markets
Following the completion of the recent AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the PGA Tour relocates 300+ miles down the sunny Californian coast to The City Of Angels, Los Angeles, for the final instalment of this year's West Coa𓆏st Swing, which signs off with another cracking edition of the Genesis Open.
So, while we look forward to another really strong renewal, now is as good a time as any to get to understand just some of the betting options that golf can throw up. We also recommend our detailed guide on golfing terms if you need further guidance on the sport.
First Round Leader Betting
Also available as an each-way bet, this market works best if you think of Thursday’s round one as its own mini-tourney – essentially, you are picking the winner of that day. It does not matter where your player finishes on Sunday, or if he even makes it that far – all that matters to you is that they top the leaderboard by the end of day one. This is particularly useful if you know a player that starts strong but typically fades as the competition goes on.
To Make the Cut
The cut line will be enforced after the second round of action on Friday. Half of the field will disappear for the weekend, while the rest of the field will stay and try to move up the leaderboard. Organisers will impose the cut line which will depend on the scoring and the course of conditions. So, if🐼 the cut line is set at ⛦par, then players will need to be at par or better to make it through to the weekend. Those players who have struggled round the course will be ones to avoid here.
Top 20 Finish Betting
There is nothing complicated about this bet, as the only thing you are required to do is successfully predict a player, or numerous players, who will finish in the top 20 places. This is quite a useful for golf – a sport where many players play to a very high standard in professional tournaments but never actually threaten to win.
These guys can become known as ‘career cheque collectors', and because they make the cut in almost all of the tournaments they play without challenging for honours, many bookmakers can underestimate these contestants, resulting in a potentially better return on investment for you.
Golf Match Betting
Match bets are basically another way to bet on who will shoot the lowest score out of a two or three ball group, known as two balls and three balls. This can add a different element to betting on golf, and can 𒀰provide thrilling finishes if your selection is caught up in a deadloc♏ked head-to-head with an opponent, especially as they’re heading down to 18th hole.
Lowest Round Betting
If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, then this market should be exactly what you're looking for. This can be for any given round, such as the first round or the final round, and the odds are usually quite attractive. Scores at the Genesis Open can vary; however, players who are red hot with their putters should be the ones to gravitate towards here.
Winning Nationality Betting
Nationality betting is another bets that works exactly as you might expect it to. The purpose of the bet here is to pick the nation where the tournament winner will come from.
Understandably, the USA will head the betting up in most golf events as they have the most players taking part. In fact, over the past 25 years of the Genesis O🍸pen, only on seven occasions has the winner been a non-American. In that time, we have had one winner from Canada (who won it back-to-back), one from England, and two winners each from South Africa and Australia.
If you happen to back a🌌 non-American in a year when an American doesn’t win it and they hail from your chosen natꦬionality, you’ll be in the money.
History of the Genesis Open
The Genesis Open started life in 1926 at the Los Angeles Country Club under the title of the Los Angeles Open. The event had a nomadic first half century, moving from venue to venue across the Los Angeles area before permanently settling at in 1973 where every event bar ✃two have been held thereafter.
In 1983, the club hosted the PGA Championshi🧸p, meaning the event moved for a year to the Rancho Park Golf Course, and in 1998, when it played host to the US Senior Open, at which point this event was held at the Valencia Country Club in Santa Clarita. The event has also been known as The Glenn Campbell-Los Angeles Open, Northern Trust Open, The Nissan Open and the Nissan Los Angeles Open, which was its name from 1995 onwards.
Both the event and its venue have earned a special place in golf history. This was the tournament that gave Jack Nicklaus his professional debut, as well as providing with his first PGA Tour tournament win, back in 1992 when he was still an amateur. It was also here in 1938 that Babe Zaharias became the first woman to play in a men’s prꦦofessi𝔉onal tournament.
In fact, 25 champions of this event have also made their way into the , including Ben Hogan, who won here in 1942, 1947 and 1948. Those victories, plus his 1948 US Open victory at Riviera, gave the club its nickname, Hogan’s Alley. Other♌ prominent Genesis Open winners include Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, Tom Watson, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead.
Joaquin Niemann took the honours at the 2022 tournament when he clinched his second PGA Tour title. The Chile🏅an had a few nervy moments, but he finished with a -19 total of 265 to fall one shot short of the record set by Lanny Wadkins in 1985.
